Ceremony of the Issuance of the Constitution, 1889

Comments - Interesting depiction of the ceremony issuing the Japanese constitution, which was issued in 1889. The Meiji Emperor sits at a cloth-covered table at right as a dignitary bows low before him, holding a proclamation. The Empress watches from left, wearing a black dress and a bonnet topped with red feathers, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting who also wear the latest Western fashions. Rows of men in uniforms line the room, with other men wearing black suits at lower left. A nice historic subject, detailed with burnishing on the black jackets.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. A few small repairs.
