Series; The Tale of the Heike, 1898

Chikanobu's Tale of the Heike - Terrific scene from Chikanobu's 1898 series based on "The Tale of the Heike," which recounts the epic twelfth-century Genpei War between the Taira (Heike) and Minamoto (Genji) clans for control of Japan. These dramatic designs illustrate clashes between famous warriors, meetings between military leaders, and legendary incidents during this warring period. Beautifully detailed and colored, these striking images feature lively color and attractive settings, many embellished with burnishing or touches of embossing. A great choice for a collector interested in this historic conflict. A rarely seen warrior series by Chikanobu.

Hasebe Nobutsura, 1898 - Terrific scene of the 12th century warrior Hasebe Nobutsura, who served Prince Mochihito, fighting off attackers at the Imperial Palace. The prince was allied with the Minamoto in a plot against the Taira, and when the plan was exposed, the loyal Nobutsura helped the prince escape, continuing fighting alone with only a ceremonial sword. When the Taira finally captured him, his bravery was so admired that they reduced his punishment from death to banishment. A great image of this legendary samurai boldly swinging his weapon, knocking his enemies down the steps. Detailed with burnishing on the armor and black cap.
