Chikanobu's Tale of the Heike - Terrific scene from Chikanobu's 1898 series based on "The Tale of the Heike," which recounts the epic twelfth-century Genpei War between the Taira (Heike) and Minamoto (Genji) clans for control of Japan. These dramatic designs illustrate clashes between famous warriors, meetings between military leaders, and legendary incidents during this warring period. Beautifully detailed and colored, these striking images feature lively color and attractive settings, many embellished with burnishing or touches of embossing. A great choice for a collector interested in this historic conflict. A rarely seen warrior series by Chikanobu.
Sasaki and Kajiwara, 1898 - Fantastic image of the famous race across the water at the Second Battle of Uji River, when two of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's generals fought to see who could reach the opposite shore and engage the enemy first. At right, Sasaki Shiro Takatsuna leads the way as arrows streak past. Kajiwara Genda Kagesue follows behind raising his sword above his head, wearing a helmet topped with deer antlers. A great depiction of this famous incident, detailed with burnishing on the armor.
