Beauty with a Hand Drum, circa 1850 - Charming half-length portrait of a beauty holding a hand drum called a tsuzumi. Her kimono is made from a fabric known as Yoshino kanto, and features an intricate leaf and blossom pattern, tied with a black obi decorated with green sprigs. A rectangular inset at upper right depicts the fox Tadanobu, a fox that had taken the form of Minamoto no Yoshitune's loyal retainer Tadanobu in a kabuki play. A beautifully detailed design from a rare Kuniyoshi beauty series. The first time we've offered this subject.
