Comments - Handsome depiction of the Meiji Emperor arriving at Shinbashi Station in Tokyo on his return from Hiroshima after Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. During the war, the Emperor commanded the military from his Imperial Headquarters in Hiroshima, which was an important military city and strategic port. He stands in the center in full dress uniform, several medals and a red sash on his chest. At left, the Empress bows in greeting, wearing a bustled dress and a bonnet topped with feathers and tied under her chin with a black ribbon. Ladies-in-waiting also wear the latest Western fashions, with dignitaries in uniform and the young Prince at right. Smoke drifts across the sky from the engine at right. The first time we've offered this great historic subject.
