Imperial Arrival at Shinbashi Station on Triumphal Return from Hiroshima, 1895

Comments - Interesting scene of the Meiji Emperor arriving at Shinbashi Station in Tokyo on his return from Hiroshima after Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. During the war, the Emperor commanded the military from his Imperial Headquarters in Hiroshima, which was an important military city and strategic port. He stands in the center in full dress uniform, several medals and a lavender sash on his chest. At right, a group of women wearing the latest European fashions waits to welcome the Emperor, with dignitaries on either side. A handsome design, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black uniforms. Only the second time we've seen this subject.

Artist - Kiyochika (1847 - 1915)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/8" + top margin as shown
