Series; Ukiyo-e Comparisons of the Cloudy Chapters of Genji, 1845 - 1846

Sekiya (The Gatehouse), Chapter 16 - Terrific image of the notorious robber and murderer Shirai Gonpachi escaping from an enclosed palanquin covered with netting. He stands with one foot atop the porter he has overcome, looking warily over his shoulder as he fastens a sash about his waist. A few raindrops slant across the evening sky, the distant trees silhouetted in gray. An intriguing subject with fine detail in the hair and netting, and soft shading in the sky.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9"

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with paper. A couple creases at edges, light vertical line where backing papers meet.
