Elegant Amusements of Eastern Genji, 1854

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji watching with amusement as a young princess plays in a miniature boat on a verandah. The toy boat is on wheels, and even has splashing waves painted on the side. The girl smiles shyly, holding her kimono sleeve to her hand as a matron kneels nearby. Genji wears a black outer kimono patterned with a dragon and spiraling clouds over a pale yellow print robe, which is faintly embossed. A blossoming cherry trees frame a view of the garden beyond, with a stone bridge leading over the water at left and a lantern on the shore near upper right. An attractive subject.
