Street Knights in a Garden, 1857

Comments - Great kabuki scene of two otokodate or street knights in a garden at night from the play commonly known as "Shiranami Gonin Otoko," a tale about five otokodate who are thieves. At left, An no Heibei stares ahead with a tightlipped frown as he tucks one hand up his sleeve. At right, the young Bunshichi Karigane grins happily, throwing his hand out at his side. Each wears a kimono with a tie-dyed pattern at top and bottom with a geometric print band in the center, tied with a yellow obi. Behind them, a variety of flowers blooms behind a decorative fence beneath a large shaped panel decorated with swallows flying above a well. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ichizo III and Iwai Kumesaburo III. An interesting design with an attractive setting, detailed with faint cloth embossing on the background of the shaped panel.
