Confrontation beside a Palanquin, 1881

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting two scenes from a kabuki play. At right, a samurai menaces a man sitting in a palanquin, thrusting his sword at the traveler, a purple cloth tied around his head. The fellow at left regards him calmly with a sober expression, his hair cropped short in the latest Meiji fashion. In the center, a beauty smiles happily at her companion, but he looks back at her with an angry frown, his brows furrowed. The wall panel at upper left depicts a colorful bird perched in a pine tree. A handsome design, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black coat and kimono, and soft shading on the night sky.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Excellent color and detail. A few light creases at edges and small repairs, vertical fold at side.
