Five Handsome Men from a Popular Picturebook, 1857

Comments - Terrific, complete five-panel kabuki print depicting five rogues in a snowy landscape. Each wears a solid color kimono with a design of large kanji characters in plaid, tied with a yellow and black obi, with a blue and white towel over the shoulders or around the neck. The men exchange glances, some frowning or scowling at their companions while others grin. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ichizo III as Shinto Tokuji, Bando Hikosaburo V as the murderer Shirai Gompachi, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the petty criminal Kirare Yosa, Nakamura Fukusuke I as Samezaya Shiroza, and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Shiranui Daijin. The snow-covered rooftops of the city stretch out behind them, with willow trees rising above the edge of the embankment. Wonderfully expressive figures in an attractive setting, with bokashi shading in the sky. A rare subject to find complete in five panels.
