Scene from Ami moyo toro no kikukiri, 1857

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Ami moyo toro no kikukiri" at the Ichimura Theater featuring from left, Bando Kamezo I as Amiuchi Shichigoro, Bando Hikosaburo IV as Kikusakeya tedai Yoshiro, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Obo Kichiza, and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Nankai Joro Osugi. In the center, Yoshiro tumbles backwards onto the ground as the sleeve he was holding rips loose, sending him falling. At left, Shichigoro glares at him angrily, kicking his foot out, his hat tucked beneath his arm. The couple at right shares an umbrella as raindrops slant across the dark sky, Kichiza frowning angrily as he watches the struggle while Osugi eyes her companion suspiciously, a white cloth draped over his head caught between his teeth. A handsome setting, nicely detailed with soft shading on the sky and undulating water.
