A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Kato Kiyomasa Hunting Tigers, 1887 - Fantastic triptych of the great warrior Kato Kiyomasa and his men hunting tigers in Korea. The samurai face two tigers in a grove of bamboo at left, a fearless samurai jabbing at one of the animals, thrusting his spear at the tiger's chest. The animals snarl ferociously, baring their fangs, ready to pounce upon their attackers. Kiyomasa surveys the operation from the right, standing atop a rocky cliff with his spear in hand, watching intently. Behind him, another warrior confronts more tigers with his spear. At left, several other warriors appear above the edge of a hill overlooking a waterfall. The horizon glows deep red as the sun sets. A beautiful composition, the image framed by tall stalks of leafy bamboo, with wonderful burnished detail on the armor and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the circles on Kiyomasa's red vest. A great dramatic subject, beautifully rendered. A fine choice for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
