A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Awaji Province: Shinchungon Taira no Tomomori, circa 1845 - Terrific portrait of the famous warrior Shinchungon Taira no Tomomori with an anchor over his shoulder as he grabs the scabbard of a samurai trying to draw his sword. After his defeat by the Minamoto at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, Tomomori committed suicide by tying himself to anchor and leaping into the sea. His kimono is patterned with heavy rope and he wears tall wooden geta sandals, a red pipe case and tobacco pouch hanging from his waist. The inset by Yoshiteru at upper right shows a mother smiling as she strolls near the water's edge, her young son at her side and coils of rope on the ground behind her. A great design.
