A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Confrontation on a Dark Road, 1861 - Interesting kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place on a road at night. At left, the wife Sayo raises her kimono sleeve above her head as she turns her face away, the edge of her scarf caught between her teeth. In the center, Onio Shinzaemon lunges to the side with his hands behind his back as he faces a Soga no Danzaburo, a rather sheepish frown on his face. Danzaburo tucks up the back of his kimono as he bends forward, holding the parcel between his teeth. A lantern lies on the ground between the men. A cherry tree with white blossoms and pink buds frames the dark sky above a low grassy slope. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, and Bando Hikosaburo V. Nice expressive figure in an attractive setting. Includes a dusting of mica across the top of the night sky.
