Comments - Beautiful limited edition woodblock print based on Hishida Shunsho's famous "Black Cat," painted in 1910 and designated an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. Hideo Shunso developed a style of painting that initially emphasized gradations of color rather than the line drawings of traditional Japanese painting. He eventually incorporated drawing into his gradations of color, creating a new style that later typified the nihonga style of Japanese painting. The cat sits on a rugged tree trunk, the oak leaves overhead detailed with two shades of metallic gold pigment adding a subtle sheen. Published by the Adachi in 1997, this terrific large format print comes from a limited edition of 200, and is numbered 57 in red ink in the lower left margin. Would make a striking framed display.
