The Battle of the Ani River, 1859

Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of the Ani River of a horseman facing several opponents on the ground. He grips his sword above his head with both hands as the warrior at left thrusts a spear at his chest, his mount trampling a fallen samurai. He is surrounded by enemies challenging him with spears and swords. The battle continues behind them with troops rushing about the mountainous landscape under a dark night sky. A great design with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the armor and weapons.
