Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the great leader Minamoto no Yoritomo and a few of his men hiding in a hollow tree following his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, stands atop the enormous tree trunk to divert Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place. A Taira commander sits astride a black horse at left, a tasseled standard bearing the Taira butterfly crest rising above him. A striking natural setting with rocky cliffs overlooking the water below. The battle continues at right with a horseman sending two enemies tumbling over the edge of an outcropping. A striking composition and a great subject for a samurai enthusiast, nicely detailed.
