Shogun's Boar Hunting Procession Crossing a Boat Bridge, 1896

Comments - Fantastic scene of a shogun's procession returning from a hunt as evening falls. The shogun rides on horseback at center, surrounded by his retainers. At right, men carry a deer tied to a bamboo pole, the samurai in front of them still dressed for the hunt carrying bows and wearing fur chaps, with quivers of arrows at their backs. The procession crosses the wide river on a pontoon bridge laid across boats, with fire baskets lighting the way and sending clouds of red smoke into the night sky. The bearers at left carry a fluttering standard emblazoned with the three hollyhock crest of the Tokugawa clan. A terrific panoramic view with wonderful detail in the figures and clothing, and soft shading in the water, sky, and smoke.
