Scene from Senzai Soga Genji no Ishizue, 1885

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play " Senzai Soga Genji no Ishizue" of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's loyal retainer, the warrior monk Musashibo Benkei, angrily waving his fan above his head at left. At lower right, Yoshitsune watches meekly, a string of prayer beads extending from beneath his purple sleeve. The three men are dresses as yamabushi or mountain priests, wearing stoles with lightly embossed white pompoms and small black caps tied with cords beneath their chins. The matron in the center watches Benkei with a sober expression, the screen behind her decorated with an ink painting of a landscape of pine trees. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Fukusuke IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V. A handsome design with expressive figures set off by the dep red background. Includes additional burnishing on Benkei's cap and fan.
