Scene from Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the famous ghost story "Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan" at the Ichimura Theater of Sato Yomoshichi standing outside the door of his house, holding a rather menacing-looking hooked tool behind his back. He tilts his head as he listens, looking suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes. Inside, his wife Osode smiles happily as she undresses for bed, unwinding her obi that reverses from black to a geometric print. She wears a finely detailed tie-dyed blue kimono, and her outer robe is draped over a low folding screen at right. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V and Iwai Kumesaburo III. An intriguing subject with a nicely detailed setting.
