The Fifth Month: Ashikaga Silk Hand-dyed Purple, 1860 - Interesting scene of Prince Genji and his companions enjoying a stroll along the bank of a canal in the fifth month, a beauty sheltering him with an umbrella. He pauses beneath a tree to view the farmers in the rice fields on the opposite shore. Workers are busy plowing and raking the flooded paddies, with planting taking place in one field and another man working a waterwheel with his feet. At lower left, irises bloom along the edge of the water, where a heron wades. A fascinating image with wonderful detail.
