Comments - Handsome kabuki scene showing the senior lady-in-waiting Tsubone Iwafuji berating her junior, the young Churo Onoe. The jealous matron was intent on causing the downfall of Onoe, so she replaced a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a sandal. Here, Iwafuji holds the sandal she has just "discovered," glaring angrily at Onoe. The beauty smiles pleasantly as she watches the older woman out of the corners of her eyes, not yet sure of what is taking place. At left, Onoe's loyal maid, Ohatsu, eavesdrops in the doorway with a distraught expression. Beautiful detail in the elegant palace setting, the room lined with blue panels decorated with large flowers with a fine reed blind hanging at left.
