Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Sodegaura kokyo no nishiki, 1855

Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Sodegaura kokyo no nishiki" at the Kawarazaki Theater of Masaki Shosaburo at left attacking a man with a sword. He holds the weapon high above his head with a worried frown as his victim sprawls on the ground before him. In the center, Kiura Shingo recoils from the violence, throwing his hand out in a stopping motion. At right, a beauty cowers behind the sleeve of her floral kimono. A candle burns in a holder on the floor nearby, a step leading into a room with a heavy kimono draped over a bed and sliding wall panels decorated with woodblock prints. The actors include Arashi Rikan III at left and Kataoka Gado II at center. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
