Saigo Takamori's Dream, 1877

Comments - Interesting diptych depicting a dream of Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. He stands on a cloud, his feet disappearing in the mist as a young boy gestures towards a mansion beyond the clouds at upper left, pennants fluttering in the breeze. When the rebellion failed, Saigo committed ritual suicide. An unusual design, nicely detailed with chrysanthemums and butterflies around the title cartouche at upper right.

Artist - Haneda Tomisaburo

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19 1/8"

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold between panels. A few wormholes, repaired. Please see photos for details.
