Eastern Genji in Midsummer, 1860

Comments - Charming scene of beauties in Prince Genji's mansion in midsummer. The woman in the foreground bows in greeting, her kimono patterned with pink flowers and tied with a blue and yellow print obi. Behind her, another woman climbs the steps to the upper story. Rain falls straight down outside, with trees in dark silhouette against the evening sky. Iris leaves decorating the edge of the roof at right resemble a traditional display for the Boys' Day holiday, which is actually in May rather than midsummer. An attractive design.
