Meiji Emperor and Empress on a Phoenix Boat, 1889

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and ladies of the court aboard a magnificent boat with a phoenix at the prow. The emperor stands in the front wearing an elegant military uniform, the empress beside him in a flowing purple robe, a folding fan in hand. The colorful ship is topped with a black lacquer canopy featuring the Meiji chrysanthemum crest, which also appears on the purple drapery hanging from the roof. Blossoming cherry trees line the banks of the Sumida River beyond. A wonderful design with lively color, fine detail, and soft bokashi shading in the water and sky. Includes embossing on the white kimono collars.

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown
