Bando Hikosaburo V as Tsubone Iwafuji, 1862

Comments - Dramatic kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V as the jealous lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, who plots the downfall of the junior lady-in-waiting Onoe by replacing a valuable stature in Onoe's care with a sandal. Here, she pretends to discover the sandal, waving it angrily above her head as she berates Onoe. Her black outer kimono features tie-dyed pine branches and wisteria blossoms, worn over an intricately patterned red under robe, her hair pulled back into a simple loop adorned with a wooden hairpin. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and embossing on the white kimono collar and trim.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown
