Scene from Kutsuwa no Oto Tazuna no Somewake, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Date no Yosaku in the play" Kutsuwa no Oto Tazuna no Somewake" at the Ichimura Theater. A former samurai, Yosaku was exiled after a servant stole money entrusted to him by his lord, and he now earns a living as a packhorse driver. Here, he rests on one knee, frowning unhappily as he clutches a white cloth in one hand. A sliding shoji panel opens onto a hallway at left, with red coals glowing in a hibachi with a lion foot at right, floral fans decorating the blue panel beyond. A nice expressive figure in a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. A few small repairs and marks, slight creasing. Please see photos for details.
