Meiji Empress Court Ladies, 1879

Comments - Handsome scene of the Meiji Empress attended by her ladies-in-waiting in a palace room overlooking a pond with an island in the center. She sits at right, holding a folding fan and wearing a crown, a young woman kneeling respectfully before her. At left, other beauties carry in a tray of sweets and a bowl on a purple cloth. Red and orange autumn maple leaves frame a view of the garden, with two bridges leading over the water to the island. An interesting design, detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the white under robes.
