Comments - Great scene from the drama "The Tale of Shiraishi" (Shiraishi banashi), a tale about two sisters who avenge their father's death. After Shiga Danshichi killed their father, the courtesan Miyagino and her younger sister Shinobu vowed revenge. After secretly training in martial arts, they challenged Shiga to a duel. They are shown here fearlessly facing the warrior. At left, Shinobu wields a sickle attached to a chain, one end of the chain wrapped about her enemy's arm. In the center, Shiga grips his sword above his head with both hands as he prepares to attack Miyagino at right, who thrusts a naginata at him. Noblemen and samurai are gathered to watch the fight, set up in a temporary arena enclosed with bamboo fencing. An incredible depiction of these heroic women, who succeeded in killing Shiga.
