Comments - Terrific kabuki design from the play "Kakitsubata Tamuke no Hanakawado" at the Kawarazaki Theater of two men in an interior, the kneeling fellow at right reacting with a worried frown when he sees the reflection of a young samurai in a hand mirror lying on the floor. At left, the otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei grimaces angrily, an ornate pipe in his outstretched hand. An elegant kettle rests on the red coals of a brazier in the room behind them, with signs hung on the wall and curtains hanging in the doorway at right. The actors are Ichikawa Ebizo V as Banzui Chobei and Ichikawa Kuzo II. An intriguing subject with great expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
