Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play Sumidagawa Nokkiri Kodan at the Morita Tehater of the daughter Kakezara tied up with rope as the matron Kataomoi thrusts a pipe under her chin. The beauty grimaces, watching her captor suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes. Behind her, the servant Kyakuhei holds her back with a bamboo broom. At left, Tenmoku Sunosuke watches the drama unfold from behind a garden gate, frowning angrily. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I, Nakamura Chutaro, Sawamura Tossho II, and Bando Hikosaburo V. Pine branches frame the red sky, creating a striking setting for the large expressive figures. The first time we've seen this design.
