Comments - Interesting scene of the Tokugawa Shogun's procession passing Suzugamori on its way from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the Emperor. The Shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event, and proved a popular subject for woodblock print artists. A nobleman rides in an enclosed palanquin in the center, the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan on the roof. Troops in matching attire surround him, with a horseman at right. Fields stretch out into the distances, dotted with pine trees, and waves lap at the shore along the bottom. A handsome depiction of this historic event. The first time we've offered this subject.
