Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The Great Battle at Musashinohara

Comments - Great depiction of a battle between Meiji Imperial forces and samurai loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Boshin or Todai Wars of 1868 - 1869. The Shogitai, the Shogun's elite shock infantry troops, battle samurai allied with the Imperial Court, fighting on foot with swords and spears. At right, a warrior lifts an enemy above his head with one hand as he grabs hold of another foe's spear with his other hand. Rain falls heavily, and smoke and flames billow from a temple at upper left. A dramatic scene, beautifully detailed.
