Edo Geisha, circa 1827 - Handsome portrait of a geisha from Edo, biting the tip of her tongue with tiny even teeth as she looks ahead. She wears a striped kimono over a red tie-dyed under robe with a brocade collar, tied with an obi featuring iris blossoms. A pocketbook wrapped in tissues is tucked into her obi, and her hair is adorned with tortoise shell combs, a hairpin decorated with a fish, and a hairpin with a tiny figure carrying a branch of coral. A fan-shaped inset at upper left shows a koto plectrum and coiled strings for the instrument, tools of the geisha's trade. A great beauty design from a rarely seen Kunisada series.
