Kameyama: Matsumoto Koshiro V as Akabori Mizuemon, 1857 - Great design from a collaborative Tokaido Road series featuring images by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. In the foreground, Matsumoto Koshiro V as the samurai Akabori Mizuemon, who has stolen a precious family sword belonging to the Yurugi clan. He stands here gripping the sword against his shoulder, scowling angrily. He wears a white robe over his armor, which is trimmed with swinging black fringe, and his wild hair is tied back with a white sash. The landscape by Hiroshige above shows travelers making their way up the steep hill at Kameyama, towards the castle at the top. The hill overlooks a river with a village on the opposite shore, with mountains in the distance beneath the rosy glow of a setting sun. A terrific print, detailed with embossing on the white kimono and bokashi shading on the mountains and sky.
