Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Azuma Kudari Gojusan Tsugi" at the Kawarazaki Theater of the samurai Jirai Taro at right, who is actually Takekawa Iganosuke, holding up a small package wrapped in cloth, a worried expression on his face as he examines it. Behind him, the woman warrior Hitomaru Oroku holds a straw mat as she looks up at him, sprawls on the ground before her. She wears a robe patterned with a dragon and swirling clouds and trimmed with fringe over armor. At left, the monk Tennichibo watches the beauty with a frown, lifting his woven hat for a better look, a water dipper on the ground before him. A few tree trunks in dark silhouette against the night sky provide a forest setting. The actors include Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Tennichibo, Bando Shuka I as Oroku, and Arashi Rikan III as Jirai Taro. An interesting design with expressive figures, soft shading on the background, and embossing on the white fur of the tunic at right.
