Seventh Month: Tanabata Festival at Sujikai Mitsuke Crossroads, 1889

Comments - Attractive Chikanobu design from his series depicting the seasonal entertainments of upper-class ladies in Edo throughout the year. In this subject, women enjoy a walk during the Tanabata Festival at Sujikai Mitsuke Crossroads, banners flying high over the city in the background. At right, a young boy carrying a parcel wrapped in green cloth around his shoulders stops to wave at a small dog following along at his feet. Behind them, a nobleman's procession crosses the square. A charming design, beautifully detailed, including embossing on the white kimono collars and trim.
