Preparing for a Concert - Charming scene of ladies preparing for a concert. The woman at left holds a biwa or Japanese lute, her kimono patterned with delicate wisteria blossoms and birds. At right, a woman kneeling beside a hibachi holds a reed pipe, wearing a violet robe with a design of hand drums and flowers. The folding screen behind them features a scene of a large drum ornamented with dragons and surrounded by flames. Lovely detail in the elegant fabrics and furnishings, with burnishing on the hair, the drum, and the black lacquer hibachi, and embossed patterns on the white kimono collars and trim. A wonderful scene from upper-class life during the Tokugawa era.
