Fireworks at Ryogoku Bridge

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the Sumida River crowded with pleasure boats as residents of Edo enjoy a summertime fireworks display. At bottom center, a beauty in a pleasure boat reaches over the side of a vessel to rinse a sake cup while her companions in the cabin play a hand game called ken. At upper right, boatmen clamber atop the roof of another boat, poling the craft along. A beauty below plays the shamisen while a man at right with a knife prepares a meal. The arched Ryogoku Bridge is packed with viewers, trails of sparks swirling across the dark sky dotted with stars. A fantastic depiction of this favorite summer activity with lively detail, capturing the energy and excitement of the scene. A great Edo era subject.
