Five Chivalrous Men and Women - Handsome kabuki portrait from the series "Five Chivalrous Men and Women (Gonin danjo no uchi), which depicts otokodate or street knights. Each print features a large half-length portrait of a commoner with a shakuhachi flute at his back, which could be used as a weapon, and a circular inset of a beauty in the guise of an otokodate. The frame surrounding the beauty is a toshidama seal a symbol of good fortune used by artists of the Utagawa school such as Toyokuni III. Includes burnishing on the black collar and the beauty's black kimono, and soft shading on the background. The first time we've seen designs from this attractive series.
