Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami

Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three samurai triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry), who can be identified by their boldly patterned kimono. The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. This dramatic print shows Matsuomaru attempting to shield the evil Shihei from his brothers. Shihei towers above them raising a wooden staff over his head, the sleeves of his dragon-patterned robe flying. An incredible design from this famous play with terrific large figures and lively color.
