Street Knights under a Flock of Crows, 1866

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting a beauty and a pair of street knights looking up as a flock of crows flies overhead. The rogue in the center grimaces, showing his teeth, as he wipes the blade of his sword clean with a white cloth. The fellow at right hides a large knife behind his back, dressed in an informal blue and white summer kimono patterned with horned demon heads. The beauty smiles slightly as she watches the birds fly past, tying an obi that reverses from black to tie-dyed red around her waist. The rooftops of the city can be seen in silhouette against the night sky behind them. A bold design with beautiful bokashi shading.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
