Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the spy Sasagawa Kojuro at right hiding behind a screen decorated with peonies as he eavesdrops on a conversation between the beauty Okoro and the priest Ryuzen. The young woman looks up with a smile, but Ryuzen scowls back at her angrily, a string of prayer beads dangling from beneath his sleeve. The scene is divided diagonally with a samurai perched in a pine tree at upper left, frowning with furrowed brows. Ichikawa Danjuro IX appears in both the left and right panels. A handsome design, nicely detailed, including a faint burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono.
