Comments - Attractive image of elegant courtesans from the Nakamanji House in the Shin Shimabara pleasure quarters in the Tsukiji area of Tokyo. Enjoying their leisure time, the beauties relax and chat on a verandah overlooking the water, the garden below dotted with blossoming cherry trees. The seated woman at left holds a long slender pipe, while the beauty standing behind her uses a brush to write a verse on a poem slip. Several kamuro or child apprentices accompany the courtesans, dressed in matching attire. A lovely scene with lanterns hanging overhead and a distant view of Mt. Fuji and the newly constructed Tsukiji Hotel at upper right.
