Series; Lacquer Sake Cups with Portraits of Actors (Haiyu Maki-e Sakazuki), 1863

Ichikawa Danjuro as Ogata Jiraiya, 1863 - Terrific design from a fine Kunisada II series featuring kabuki actor portraits as reflected in red lacquer sake cups. The portraits are beautifully drawn with fine line work and expressive faces, set off by the red of the cup. Japanese maple leaves and softly shaded blue water fill the background. Here, Ichikawa Danjuro portrays the folk hero and magician Ogata Jiraiya, wearing a black kimono with a subtle burnished pattern and a red collar with yellow clouds and blue blossoms. A handsome and interesting format, nice detailed with fine line work in the hair.
