The Night Attack of the 47 Ronin, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene from the "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the 47 ronin during the night attack on Moronao's castle. At right, the ronin have discovered Moronao's hiding place in the storage shed, dragging him out into the snowy courtyard as he struggles to free himself. In the center, Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, looks on with an astonished frown, still gripping his tasseled command baton. Below him, a samurai blows a whistle to signal that they have found the villain, while the other warriors continue fighting one of Moronao's retainers at left. On the balcony of the palace at upper left, a ronin uses a spear to knock an opponent over the railing and onto the snowy roof, while the battle continues downstairs. A great dramatic scene with expressive faces and a nicely detailed setting.
