The Fifty-three Stations: Yui, 1860

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring Yajirobei and Kitahachi, the bumbling heroes of the novel "Shank's Mare Tokaido," which chronicles their comic misadventures traveling by foot along the Tokaido Road. In the center, a blind man carries Kitahachi across a narrow river, wading through the knee-deep water as the commoner waves excitedly to his traveling companion at right. Yajirobei scratches his head with a puzzled frown as he watches, a pipe in his mouth and a small container hanging from a red cord over his shoulder. At left, an elderly man grimaces as he stands on the shore gripping a walking stick. A blossoming plum tree and a willow frame the night sky. Expressive figures in an attractive landscape setting.
