Series; Thirty-six Fashionable Restaurants of the Eastern Capital, 1852
Odo Terasaki Restaurant: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Shirai Gonpachi, 1852 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the robber and murderer Shirai Gonpachi, looking over her shoulder with a slightly alarmed expression, a small cloth-wrapped bundle clenched between his teeth. One sleeve of his black kimono is pushed down to the waist to reveal a red under robe with a blue collar, his hands gripping his swords as if ready to spring into action. The scene above depicts the Odo Terasaki (or Ooto-kichi) Restaurant, with customers gathered in front of the entrance. The title cartouche is framed with tiny bowls of flood and bottles of sake. A great composition with fine line work in the hair. A rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
